Presentation

Ah donate il caro sposo, a setting by Giuseppe Maria Foppa, was composed by Gioachino Antonio Rossini in 1813 (Bb Major) and premiered the same year. This aria is part of the unique act I of the opera, Il signor Bruschino.

Il signor Bruschino is part of several operas Rossini composed extremely young. In 1813, year where it was premiered, Rossini was barely twenty-one year’s old. Few composers were able to reach international fame as fast as he did and few were as prolific: between 1812 and 1813, no less than ten different operas by Rossini were premiered! If Il signor Bruschino was acclaimed, it is Rossini’s operas, Tancredi and L’italiana in Algeri, also composed in 1913, that will make him one of the most acclaimed Italian composers of his time.
Il signor Bruschino is a one act operatic farsa, a style that was very popular in those years in Venise. The opera opens on Florville and Sofia enjoying a moment together in her father’s garden. Florville hopes that now that his father is dead, they will be able to marry. Sofia sadly lets him know she has been promised to the son of Signor Bruschino. Florville decides to trick his way into marrying her. Sofia departs as the inn-keeper Filiberto comes in. He is fuming about the money the son of Signor Bruschino owes him. Florville tells him he is the agent of Signor Gaudenzio (Sofia’s father). The inn-keeper tells him the son of Bruschino has just been imprisoned for not paying his bill at the inn and that he must give a letter to Gaudenzio to be given to his father, explaining the situation. Florville pays part of the debt on the condition of the son of Bruschino remain detained. He takes the letter.
In the next scene, Gaudenzio is expressing his satisfaction at the thought of Sofia marrying soon. The maid, Marianna comes in and gives him a letter apparently from Signor Bruschino (in reality Florville wrote it). This letter describes the appearance of the young Bruschino and asks that he be detained and punished as he has been acting wrongly. Florville, identified as the young Bruschino is brought to Gaudenzio and he gives him the letter where he explains to his father what has happened. Gaudenzio asks him to not be afraid and assures him he will convince his father to be clement.
The old Bruschino arrives at this point and when Florville starts begging for his forgiveness, he does not recognize him and asks who is he? To all, his violent rejection of his son seems unfair and disproportionate.
In the next scene, Sofia, alone with the old Bruschino reproaches him “his cruelty” and begs him to let her marry “his son” in her aria: Ah, donate il caro sposo.
